Over the past several years we have all seen reports that child abuse
and neglect has declined - yet all the while every CAC director I talked
with saw increases. Our center is no exception. As of May 2013 we saw a 50%
increase in forensic interviews and 86% increase in medical exams. The
increase in medical exams is in large part due to an increase in the number
of physical abuse exams.
The NY Times recently published a
fascinating look at the real trends in child abuse, “How
Googling Unmasks Child Abuse”. The article describes how the Great
Recession actually caused a significant increase in child abuse and also was
a factor in the misleading reports.
